Cycling between Spree and Neisse - from the Spreewald to the Neissetal (Spree Forest to Neisse Valley)from the Spremberg Dam into the Schlaubetal National Park over 1000 km of cycle paths in beautiful countryside
The cycle path network between the Spree and the Neisse has developed into the most pleasant in the whole of Brandenburg. Over 500 km of paths and many bridges have been newly built. The path network now stretches to 1000 km. Around 25 million euros have been invested, a large percentage coming from grants.
The Spree Cycle Path (stretching for 360km from the source of the Spree in the mountains of Saxony to Berlin), and the Oder-Neisse Cycle Path (450 km from the Zittauer hills to the Baltic Sea) cross the Spree Neisse region for a distance of about 60km. Both paths lead the cyclist for the most part past the river dikes and are made of asphalt. The Brandenburg Tour and the Spree Neisse Tour both allow the cyclist to enjoy the wonderful landscape of the Spree Forest, the river valleys of the Spree and the Neisse, the Schlaubetal National Park and the Muskauer Faltenbogen far away from the noise and the smells of the main roads of the region.
The many and varied opportunities for stops along each tour give the cyclist the ideal chance to learn more about the region. The Brandenburg Textile Museum in Forst, the Museum of the Hat Industry in Guben, the Glassworks in Döbern all tell of the history of Spree-Neisse. Fans of the 1998 film of Erwin Strittmatter’s book “The Shop” can cycle from “Grodk” (Spremberg) to “Bossdom” (Bohsdorf). A Mining Cycle Tour winds its way through the mining region Fürst-Pückler-Country past the 3 still-active brown coal mines and the reclaimed former mining land. The “Gherkin Cycle Path” leads you through all there is to know about the beloved vegetable! The Tourist Information Centres throughout the region are on hand with touring tips and maps. Accommodation of all types is available: our hotels, B&Bs, private rooms and campsites are well used to catering for cyclists.
You can also enjoy your cycle tour without having to cart your luggage about with you: you can, for example, do a 7-day cycle tour, covering 250 km. This can be booked in a travel agent’s or in any of the local tourist information offices.
Every year from March to October thousands of cyclists descend on the region for the “Stamp Hunt”. A special “Cyclist’s Pass” contains a list of all the museums, restaurants and other leisure establishments where these stamps are available. In October your pass, containing anything from 5 to 150 stamps from your visits to these participating establishments, can be used to win prizes. These prizes include vouchers for hotels, for restaurants, as well as a Christmas goose, cycling accessories, or Döbern crystal. It is well worth taking part!
