The living space of the Klinge Mammoth
The mammoth existed about 120,000 years ago in the Eem interglacial period. Evidence in pollen and leaves show that the climate and vegetation were similar to the current conditions. The mean temperature was little higher than today.
In Klinge, several small lakes existed with fish, water lilies, the relevant bank vegetation, amphibians and reptiles. According to general opinion, the mammoth existed exclusively in cold climate. However, his occurrence in Klinge suggests that it settled in warmer fields. It is conceivable that it migrated for food central Europe. Possibly it was initially not at all adapted to the cold climate of the Tundra, but existed in open forest landscapes, in forest perimeter and meadows.
