This town, dating from 1301, underwent a rapid development of both craft and trade due to its position on an important trade route of the Middle Ages – the Sugar Road. In the 17th Century the Textile Industry also played its part in the shaping of the town.In Gartenstraße, on the corner of Mittelstraße, you can still see today a stone with the inscription “Mid-point of the German Empire”, which was the position held by Spremberg within the Germany of 1817. Among the sites of the town is the castle, which today houses the Museum of Lower Lusatia.

The centre of the town, around the Market Square and the “Bullwinkel” has been visibly restored over the last few years.
A further landmark of the town is the Bismarck Tower on Georgenberg. The Tower dates from 1903 and affords a wonderful view of the town, nestled in the Spree valley.

A drawing point for Sprembergers and visitors is the open-air pool in Kochsagrund, opened in 1992. A popular nearby destination for trips is the Spremberg Dam.
The yearly August Festival gives visitors the opportunity to get to know Spremberg characters from myth and legend, including the Robber Chief Lauermann and Mother Birnbaum!
